The Coalition of Private Schools in Ghana has called on all private schools, parents, teachers, learners, and community members across Ghana to take advantage of the ongoing free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration and renewal exercise launched by the National Health Insurance Authority.

The special nationwide campaign, known as the “STORM Initiative,” began on April 15 and will run until May 31, 2026. The initiative is aimed at increasing active NHIS membership and improving access to healthcare services for all Ghanaians.

Under the initiative, first-time applicants can register for NHIS free of charge, while individuals with expired NHIS cards can also renew their memberships at no cost. Beneficiaries will additionally enjoy immediate activation of their NHIS coverage without the usual one-month waiting period.

According to COPSIG, the exercise also allows members to conveniently renew their NHIS cards through mobile services by dialing *929# or using the MyNHIS mobile application.

The NHIS currently covers approximately 95 percent of disease conditions, including outpatient and inpatient care, maternity services, essential medicines, and other treatment services.

In a notice signed by Rev. Nelson Aho, Director of Partnership and Operations at COPSIG, the organization encouraged all member schools to ensure that learners, teachers, parents, and school workers renew expired NHIS cards promptly. Schools were also urged to educate parents and surrounding communities on the importance of maintaining active health insurance coverage.

COPSIG further reminded the public that NHIS registration remains permanently free for children under 18 years, pregnant women, indigent persons, and senior citizens aged 70 years and above.

The organization noted that a valid Ghana Card may be required during the registration or renewal process.

“As this exercise is time-bound and normal renewal fees will resume after May 31, 2026, all member schools are encouraged to act promptly,” the statement emphasized.

COPSIG believes the initiative will help strengthen healthcare access within Ghana’s private education sector and ensure that every child, teacher, parent, and worker can receive healthcare services when needed.
